Slot Machine RTP Explained: How to Choose Slots That Pay More

6 min read·

RTP stands for Return to Player, and it is the single most useful number to understand about any slot machine. A slot with 96 percent RTP returns 96 cents for every dollar wagered over millions of spins. The remaining 4 percent is the house edge. Understanding RTP and its partner metric, volatility, changes how you choose which slots to play.

What RTP actually tells you

RTP is a long-run statistical average, not a session guarantee. In any given hour of play, you might win well above the RTP or lose much more than the 4 percent edge suggests. The number only becomes accurate over hundreds of thousands of spins across all players on that game.

What RTP does tell you is the baseline cost of playing. A 96 percent RTP slot is cheaper to play, statistically, than a 93 percent RTP slot. Over a 500-spin session at 1 dollar per spin, the expected loss difference between these two is 15 dollars. Across a year of regular play, that difference compounds significantly.

Volatility: how the RTP is distributed

Two slots can have identical RTPs and feel completely different because of volatility. Low-volatility slots pay out small amounts frequently. You get many wins per session, your balance fluctuates gradually, and big multipliers are rare. High-volatility slots pay out infrequently but with large multipliers when they do.

The practical implication: low volatility is better for extended entertainment on a fixed budget, because your money lasts longer. High volatility is better if you specifically want to chase a large payout and accept that most sessions will end early.

Finding RTP for slots on Rollify

On Rollify, the RTP for each game is displayed in the GameSEOSection below the game. Click on any slot and scroll down to see the RTP chip. For Rollify Originals, the house edge is explicitly published because these are provably fair games.

Aim for slots with 96 percent or higher RTP for regular play. Many Pragmatic Play and Play'n GO slots in this range exist in the Rollify library. Avoid slots below 94 percent RTP unless the feature set specifically appeals to you and you understand the increased cost.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher RTP mean I will win more?

Not in any single session. RTP is a long-run average. You can win a session on a low-RTP slot and lose on a high-RTP one. Over many sessions, higher RTP means lower average losses.

What is a good RTP for a slot?

96 percent or higher is generally considered good. Some slots go as high as 98 to 99 percent. Below 94 percent is considered unfavourable.

Is volatility more important than RTP?

They measure different things. RTP determines your long-run expected loss. Volatility determines how your bankroll moves during a session. Both matter depending on your goals.

Can casinos change the RTP of a slot?

Some casino platforms allow operators to select from different RTP settings offered by the game provider. On Rollify, the RTP shown is accurate for the configuration running on the platform.
